Fly Fishing For Northern Pike in Maine
Guided Fly fishing for northern pike with Maine Fly Guide.
Northern pike are one of my favorite species to target on a fly in Maine, part of what I enjoy is the fact of not effecting Maines trout and salmon, aside from that what avid fly fisher does not like casting a 8 weight rod with large flys to large fish!!
On a day pike fishing with Brandon Bichrest you can expect to meet at the Androscoggin river boat launch (or chosen area lake). We will load my 2016 18’ CC fishing boat and head to where the pike are. We will fish a lot of back coves, side channels, river inlets, around weedy areas, we will cast large streamers or surface plugs with water shedding feathers making them cast light and smooth to help eliminate over exhausting your arm after casting all day. Cast as far as you can toward the structure strip strip strip at a even speed with a few pauses if the water depth alows and when a pike decided to eat your fly there is no mistaking it! The take is normally very exciting, with sizable pike they take with meaning typicaly swim away from the boat fast screaming drag once they feel your strong fight often they will turn and swim back to the boat and often under. From this point some pike continue fighting and screaming drag back and forth, other pike will lie dead let you drag them in then right at the boat swim away and scream drag, then drag back in and same thing over and over, Either way I find it very exciting! When fly fishing for pike in Maine on a average day do not expect to catch pike all day long, 2 or 3 is a average day. On a fly fishing for northern pike trip on the Androscoggin river with minor tackle change we can target smallmouth bass wich are much more abundant on the river, on a full day trip we will often spend half day targeting each.
