Planning for first trips of the season

It has been a decent winter here along the Androscoggin river in Maine, we have got more snow than in the past several years. Now it is late febuary we have only 5 weeks until April 1st, I have been tying flys, fixing lures, sharpening hooks, and organizing tackle.

The first trip I do every season are fly fish for Pike in the shallows, mostly at Sebago lake and the tributaries. While fly fishing for Pike in certain areas we can also target Landlocked Salmon.

This trip is best from April 1 - May 15, when the Sebago pike bite slows down I will move the trips to one of the Belgrade lakes then to the Androscoggin river where the pike bite stays decent all summer.

Fly Fishing for Northern Pike is so much fun, when we sight a large pike sitting in 2’ of water and you cast to it your fly leads them by a few feet it all still the pike just looks you let the fly sink… one strip two strips the pike go’s 0-100 and makes a mud cloud its on your fly! A short pull then it jets at you under the boat and holds… the away 60’ like a torpedo and holds strong with short strong pulls you need to let it pull or it will rip the fly out of its mouth =, then the pike begins to give up it goes belly up and you drag it to the boat, we can almost net it then it turns and a new energy it blitz 60’ away again… over and over… then we hopefully get it in the net!

That is how a typical Pike catch goes
